Our team at First Home Equity Loans works hard for our clients before, during and after the purchase a home. In that spirit we wanted to share our new home moving checklist. One of the resources some of our advisors provide upon closing.
Most have the knowledge that there is a LOT to co-ordinate when preparing to move. So developing a list will make the move go smoothly.
As a new homeowner, there a many tasks you will want to prioritize to ensure the move is safe, secure and staged for success, before you move.
New Home Moving Checklist
Locate and Know – It seems simple, but knowledge always prevails. Take the time to find/locate your breaker box and water shut-off valves. Just in case there is an emergency, it is important to know where to go. Even in a new home!
Change The Locks – Copies of keys could be floating around. Old tenants, sub-contractors, heck even your new neighbors might have a copy of the key they kept for the previous home owner. You might even consider planning forward an have a locksmith change them before moving in.
Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors – These days many of them are hard wired, but they often have a battery back up. Test the batteries and make sure everything is working. If not, replace them before you forget them. They often blend right in with the ceiling.
Meet Your Neighbors – Most of us look forward to enjoying living within a community. Make a small map of the streets around you and make a point to introduce yourself. Exchange contact information and maybe join the local Nextdoor Community App.
Your Monthly Checklist – Yeah another list to make. This one is to help keep things operating efficiently and effectively. Depending on the appliances you have, some require monthly maintenance. We have found that setting a calendar notification at the beginning or end of every month is very helpful.
- Drain Your Washer – Some of the new laundry Washers have a need to be drained every month.
- Change Your HVAC Air Filter – Perhaps one the greatest opportunities to save yourself a big headache. By changing the filters monthly, you help the AC unit operate unrestricted. Be sure to check your manual or speak with a professional. More pleats in your air filter might catch more dust, but could also restrict airflow. Make a not of the sizes… Some homes could have multiple sizes throughout the house. Having that information on your phone comes in handy when your at Home Depot or Lowes.
- Check Your Gutters – This one probably does not need to be monthly, maybe every quarter or six months, depending on where you live and how big the surrounding trees are. Nothing is worse than being in the middle of a big southern storm and the gutters are clogged and water starts flowing where it should not be.
